Overhead shade for everyday living

A patio cover is a roofed structure over an outdoor area. Unlike an open pergola, a solid cover provides continuous overhead shade. It can shelter a dining table or seating area while keeping the sides open. Low afternoon sun and wind-driven rain can still enter from the edges.

Find the right roof and footprint

The shape of the house and the position of your patio help narrow the options.

  • Attached covers connect to a suitable part of the home; connections, flashing and drainage need assessment.
  • Freestanding covers create shade away from the house and require their own supports and foundations.
  • Solid roof panels offer consistent overhead coverage. Insulated panels may be an option depending on the system.
  • Louvered roofs adjust the opening overhead; moving parts and drainage add considerations.

Build around the patio you already have

A usable slab does not automatically mean it can support new posts. A provider should review foundations, roof connections, drainage, doors, windows and utilities before recommending a structure. An existing cover may need only targeted repairs or added side shade.

What affects scope and cost?

Covered area, roof material, attachment details, post placement, footing work, site access and drainage all affect the scope. Electrical additions require their own review. Ask the provider and the relevant building authority to confirm permits, structural documentation and applicable requirements; check any HOA rules before authorizing work.
